Miss Asian Las Vegas and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada teamed up for a celebration of education on “International Literacy Day,” Monday, Sept. 8 (Pictured: Miss Asian Las Vegas Catherine Ho lets young girl try on her Pageant Crown).
The afternoon of community service marked the 20-day countdown until the Miss Asian Las Vegas delegates hit the pageant stage.
The Lied Clubhouse quickly transformed into a story-telling affair bursting with laughter and applause as pageant contenders read aloud to the children. By presenting books about Asian culture and tradition, contestants were able to educate the kids on their ethnicity, furthering the pageant’s purpose of creating a more culturally-aware community. From the books selected, the children particularly enjoyed “Dragon Dance,” “Mulan,” “Five Little Monkeys,” “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” “No, David!” and “The Cat in the Hat.”
“Reading at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada reminds me that our purpose extends far beyond the pageant stage,” said Miss Asian Las Vegas Owner and Founder Annie Chang. “We are role models in the community, and the best way to encourage children to read is by interacting with them in a sincere and relatable way.”
Among the participants were Catherine Ho, the reigning Miss Asian Las Vegas; Elisa Chan, the reigning Miss Chinese Las Vegas; Celina Go, 2014 TEEN delegate; Rianne Lu, 2014 TEEN delegate; Judy Neo, 2014 MRS. delegate; and Erica Valdriz, 2014 MISS delegate. Ho and Chan were adorned in their crowns and sashes they won at last year’s pageant, and even let the kids try them on.
In addition to reading, contestants communicated the significance of literacy and learning. The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) established “International Literacy Day” more than 40 years ago, promoting literacy as a human right and the foundation of learning.
