Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women (excluding skin cancer) and second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women. American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk began in 1993 and has quickly become one of the largest and most powerful networks of breast cancer events in the nation. To date, Making Strides events throughout the country have raised $594 million for breast cancer programs. In 2013, 2,067 newly diagnosed patients were served in the Nevada offices. Additionally, the Southern Nevada chapter provided nearly 3,600 free wigs, scarves, hats, turbans, and prosthesis to patients; as well as more than 4,800 free rides for cancer patients traveling to and from their treatment appointments; among several other initiatives to support patients of breast cancer and their families.
The Making Strides walk coincides with Station Casinos’ 5th annual Project Pink, an initiative to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. In addition to several pink menu items being sold throughout its restaurants, the company will also donate gaming winnings from designated pink gaming areas including blackjack, poker and bingo. Additionally, Red Rock Resort will offer a commemorative pink Boarding Pass players rewards card for new cardholders available only on October 26 at the race and at Red Rock’s Rewards Center. For every new card issued, the Company will donate $1 back to Project Pink. To date, more than $200,000 has been raised through Project Pink for the fight against breast cancer.
Participants may sign up now for the non-competitive 5K (3.1 miles) walk, which begins at Red Rock Resort and will take walkers though the newly-opened Downtown Summerlin shopping center and back to the resort. Both individual walkers and teams are encouraged to participate. There is no fee to register for the walk. Online registration is available at www.MakingStridesWalk.org/LasVegasNV, which doubles as the walker’s or team’s fundraising site where tax-deductible donations may be made. On-site registration and packet pick up for the event begins at 7 a.m. with a rolling start time of 7:30 a.m.
Project Pink was developed in 2010 by Red Rock’s executive pastry chef Jaret Blinn, who together with the executive team at Red Rock Resort, have become active in the fight against breast cancer after Blinn’s mother lost her battle with the disease. The response by the public was so overwhelming that the company expanded those efforts to several areas throughout each property to raise even greater awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer. This year, the majority of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will occur in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These events help the American Cancer Society invest in groundbreaking breast cancer research, help women diagnosed with breast cancer and ensure access to screenings and treatment for women who need them. Making Strides participants also support the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in its efforts to urge lawmakers to fund research that will help prevent and treat breast cancer.
