The Annual Girls on the Run Las Vegas Spring 5k Race/Walk
Girls on the Run is a non-profit, youth empowerment program that began in 1996 and now has 225 councils across the nation and in Canada. To date, over one million girls have completed the program. The Las Vegas chapter began Fall 2011 and has more than 400 elementary and middle school girls enrolled. This spring they trained for a 5K run/walk over the course of 10 weeks while also building critical life skills through a carefully crafted and researched curriculum. This season marks the first time the middle school program, Heart&Sole, has been offered in our community.
The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident.
Girls on the Run volunteer coaches help each girl understand and celebrate herself, value her relationships, learn how to appreciate teamwork and become more community-minded. Girls on the Run enables girls to effectively problem solve and remain strong during adolescence. Topics include dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer-pressure, bullying, gossip, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community.
