To participate, simply leave the non-perishable food items, such as as cereal, pasta, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, and canned protein (like tuna and chicken) in a bag by, or in, your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick up the items during their normal routes on Saturday, May 14, 2016.

This year, community members can also contribute money to provide fresh produce to pantries throughout the month of May by donating online at to http://www.stampyourgood.com/.

“All the food that we collect locally, stays here in the valley to help feed those in need in Southern Nevada,” said Glenn Norton, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 2502, representing Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City. “We are working with 19 local food pantries this year who rely on this food drive to get them through the summer months when children are not in school. During the summer, especially, families rely on the pantries to help put nutritious food on the table.”

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the largest one-day food drive in America and is always held on the second Saturday in May because by then, most food banks are starting to run out of donations received during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods.

Last year, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected more than 300,000 pounds of food in Southern Nevada, which was an almost 50% increase over the previous year’s grand total. Nationally, individuals donated over 70 million pounds of non-perishable food in 2015. The participating letter carriers are hoping to surpass these numbers in 2016.
