The Nevada Northern Railway will dazzle spectators on Saturday, Jan. 19 during its 10th annual fireworks spectacular, which shakes-up the typical stationary light show. The railway presents a more exciting demonstration fitting of the area’s rich history, from aboard the Fireworks Express in Central Nevada, where experts ignite fireworks from the back of a moving, steam-powered train pulled by a 110-year old steam-locomotive (Photo credit: Patrick Timothy Mullikin).
Passengers keep warm in the heated coach car during the ride and can also see the light show from an open-air flat car after nightfall. The Fireworks Express will cruise through rural Nevada from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tickets are $39 for adults, $20 for children up to 12 years old and free for kids under four years old.
“Where else can you see fireworks launched from of a moving steam train? The answer is only in Ely, Nevada — and this is the tenth year that we have done it! You can head into town with the crowds to see a light show any year, but the experience you get out here can’t be beat,” said Mark Bassett, president of Nevada Northern Railway.
A day filled with festivities, Jan. 19 also marks another not-to-miss event, Historic Locomotive 93’s 110 Birthday Celebration. Just before the Fireworks Express heads out on its frosty journey, Locomotive 93 will give guests a special ride starting at 1 p.m.
This engine is a testament to the work of builders, staff and volunteers to this day, as she is still hauling trains as she was intended 110 years ago, regardless of weather. Guests will enjoy a magical perspective as 93 cruises through the frozen landscape, as well as discounted pricing in honor of her birthday. Tickets will be $20 for adults and children ages four to 12 can ride for just $10.
All trains at the Nevada Northern Railway feature an on-board restroom, snacks and beverages for purchase, and are wheelchair accessible. With the purchase of Fireworks Express tickets guests will also have the opportunity to buy a four-day pass to ride the trains all weekend long. Annual memberships to Nevada Northern Railway include discounted ticket pricing and memberships start at just $30.
