To say it was a great week for Summerlin South Little League would be putting it lightly. The league, comprised of 850+ kids aged 4-15, and 350+ volunteers, was already excited for opening day at the beautiful Mesa Park, when they learned they had a surprise visitor (Pictured: Vegas Golden Knights Erik Haula and Summerlin South’s President Brandon Barkhuff on Summerlin South Little League Opening Day).

Summerlin South Little League with First “pitch”
Vegas Golden Knights’ Erik Haula was welcomed by a loud “Go Knights Go” chant repeated over and over by all of the kids on the baseball field. Haula proceeded to “throw” the first pitch of the season, or in his case, took a wrist shot with the baseball, which resulted in one bounce over home plate into the catcher’s glove! As the wild chant continued, Haula ran over to give his signed personalized hockey stick to the lucky and talented home run derby winner. Haula’s generosity didn’t stop there – he made sure he stuck around to sign hats and take pictures with a bunch of the starry eyed young baseball players.
Next up to the pitcher’s mound was the D Las Vegas owner, Derek Stevens. Derek, a proud sponsor of Summerlin South Little League for the past five years, was happy to show his support by throwing out the first pitch of the game. Derek’s love for baseball dates back to when he used to coach his own kids in the sport. Valuable advice was shared by Derek and appreciated by the crowd. “When you get off the field, hug your mom and dad…” resonated deeply with the kids and adults alike, as did many other words delivered by the successful business man.
This is not the first time that Summerlin South has seen a Vegas Golden Knight – last spring, star player Alex Tuch stopped by to watch some of his friends’ kids compete in the championship game. Tuch posed for photos with hundreds of kids during the game, and then afterwards, he joined both teams and their families on the field for more photos. The Vegas Golden Knights organization and their gracious players have consistently given back to their community in so many ways- especially to the children.
Summerlin South’s President Brandon Barkhoff ended the day by joining Erik Haula and Derek Stevens on the field, thanking them for all of the love and excitement they brought to Summerlin South Little League’s opening day. All of this, and it’s only the first day of the season!
