After opening for The Jackson 5, Motown Records founder Berry Gordy signed the Commodores in 1972, becoming Motown’s largest selling act throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s. Their first single “Machine Gun” reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was featured in many films including Boogie Nights. Heavily influenced by funk, the Commodores’ next three albums produced charting singles including the hit “Brick House.”

Shifting towards a softer, soulful sound, the Commodores scored big with the ballad, “Easy.” With the release of “Three Times a Lady” in 1978, the Commodores attained #1 status and songwriter Lionel Richie was nominated for Song of the Year at the 1979 Grammy Awards. More hits followed, including “Sail On,” “Still,” and “Oh No.” In 1985, the Commodores won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance with the multi-platinum smash hit, “Nightshift.”
