Professional Women in Building of Southern Nevada (PWB), an organization that aims to make advancements for women working in the building industry through networking opportunities and philanthropy, awarded a total of $23,000 to recipients through its Building Hope Scholarship. PWB is a council part of the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association.
A ceremonial event, which took place at Richmond American Homes, gathered members of PWB council and 10 young female recipients, who were awarded amounts from $2,000 to $2,750 each. Annually, the organization raises thousands of dollars to support educational opportunities for female students who are interested in pursuing professional development, education and certification in fields of study relative to the building industry.
“We’re extremely proud that we can continue to fund our Building Hope scholarship as it plays a huge role in providing opportunities for women interested in the field of home building and construction,” said Shanon Gerrity, Board Chair at PWB. “Further, we take one step closer to diversifying our local industry, aiming to significantly increase the total number of females in the workforce – which we estimate is only at around 10 percent currently.”
Despite nationwide COVID-19 response measures necessitating cancellation of PWB’s staple Wine Pull fundraiser where a majority of the scholarship dollars are raised through corporate sponsorships, nearly every single corporate participant chose to donate in full. The result more than doubled the scholarship’s total amount awarded in 2019.
Companies who made donations contributing to the scholarship include: Alpha Landscapes, Builders Door & Trim, Carpets N More, Classic Floors, Comfort Engineering, Cooper Roofing, Coronado Concrete, Desert Lumber, Dominion Environmental, Energy Inspectors Corp/WREDCO, Environmental StoneWorks, Ferguson Showroom, GCW Engineering, GeoTek, Inc., Green Serenity, The Howard Hughes Corp., Jmac Plumbing & Air, JS Landscaping, JS Pest Control, Masonite, Richmond American Homes, Rightway Drywall & Paint, Sierra Air Conditioning, Sunrise Carpentry Inc., Sunstate Companies, LLC, Taney Engineering, Taylor Morrison, Ticor Title of Nevada and USI Silver State.
“The gracious actions from donors, despite the state of the world at this time, reflect the kindhearted nature of the building industry that we are all so proud to take part in and we are so very thankful to everyone involved,” Gerrity concluded.
