Veterans and active duty service members will take to the streets of Las Vegas for the Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020. Veteran and military participants hike anywhere from eight to 14 miles, some carrying heavy packs, some in wheelchairs, but all in a spirit of support and camaraderie with a singular mission – to eliminate veteran suicide.
Veterans normally hike wearing only their combat boots and “silkies,” traditional military physical training shorts full of nostalgia that help promote the environment of humor and camaraderie organizers are hoping to create.
“The data on veteran suicide is grossly underestimated. The last major study was done in 2012 and only included the participation of 21 states. Especially during COVID-19, we need to show our support and understanding more than ever as numbers continue to rise,” said event spokesperson Yonel Dorelis.
This year will find more than 60 events across the United States bringing veterans and active duty participants together for this incredible, and needed in these times, cause.
The event invites warriors of all branches and ranks – Veteran, Active Duty, Reservist, and National Guard to join in for the step-off, hike, and post-celebration (all done socially distant, masks required and per government regulations). Organizers ask family members, friends, and the community to join at the scheduled stops and cheer, honk, and show support the hike!
