Henderson Libraries Offers Activities for Teens During Summer Vacation

Summer vacation is right around the corner, and Henderson Libraries is gearing up for the season with a plethora of activities for teens to keep cool and stay busy while school is out of session.

Events including a Rock Band challenge, teen poetry cafe and art classes are available throughout June, July and August at the various Henderson Library locations.

“When school is out of session and teens are left to occupy themselves, oftentimes they don’t think to turn to their local library for something fun to do. We’re working to change that,” said Tom Fay, the executive director of Henderson Libraries. “We’ve incorporated many teen-focused events into our summer calendar to get them involved with other young adults from the community.”

On Tuesday, June 2, from 3-4:30 p.m. the Green Valley Library will host a teen ice cream social in the program room.

The teen book club and the Teen Advisory Group at the Green Valley Library are offered as monthly get-togethers. The book club will meet the last Tuesday of each month from 3-4 p.m. and the Teen Advisory Group will meet on the second Tuesday of each month from 3-4 p.m. Both will meet in the program room.

The Green Valley Library is offering a creative café with coffee painting on Tuesday, June 16, for young adults. The event will run from 6-7:30 p.m. in the program room. The Green Valley Library is also offering a journal making class for teens from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, in the program room.

At Gibson Library, a teen poetry café will be offered on Thursday, July 9, to encourage teens to write and perform written works. The event will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. in the story room. Gibson Library will also host a CD scrapbook class where teens will learn how to make scrapbooks out of old CDs. This class will run from 3-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, in the story room.

One of the biggest draws for teens this summer is the Rock Band event at the Paseo Verde Library on Saturday, June 6, from 2:30-4 p.m. Teens are invited to challenge their friends on the big screen in one of today’s most popular interactive video games.

Most of the events available for teens are free and all are open to the public. More information can be found at www.mypubliclibrary.com. Teens can also register for events online.
