A fast-spreading EHV-1 virus outbreak among horses has cast serious doubt over whether the 2025 NFR in Las Vegas can proceed as planned.
As the annual event, the rodeo world is on edge. With several nearby events cancelled or postponed, organizers and fans alike are bracing for possible disruption.
Horse Virus Outbreak Threatens 2025 NFR Rodeo Season

The outbreak of EHV-1 has already forced cancellations across multiple states, and now the 2025 NFR. This is the biggest rodeo event of the year, and it faces real risk. According to recent reports, the virus outbreak is linked to events held in Texas and Oklahoma, including major rodeo competitions.
Authorities say the strain is highly contagious among horses and can cause a neurological condition known as EHM (Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy). Symptoms range from respiratory issues to severe neurological problems. In outbreak conditions, quarantine and strict containment protocols are triggered.
Those developments have put the NFR 2025 horse virus safety plans under scrutiny. If EHV-1 is detected among any of the livestock scheduled to compete in Las Vegas, industry rules suggest events could be halted immediately. This means quarantines might follow, potentially derailing the entire rodeo.
New Health Rules and Event Cancellations Shake Confidence

In response to the outbreak, the organizers of the NFR have rolled out updated equine health guidelines. All horses entering Las Vegas must now carry a seven-day Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). The handlers must obtain a Nevada entry permit number and undergo daily temperature checks. Travel for horses is also being restricted under a no-travel advisory.
Despite these precautions, butterfly effects from the virus have already hit other related events. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, events including the National Finals Breakaway Roping have been postponed. This competition is traditionally held close to the NFR. Others include the PRCA Permit Challenge and the Benny Binion Bucking Horse Sale. This came after the venue in Las Vegas pulled permission, citing updated security guidelines.
These developments have fans and participants on high alert. The strict new protocols are designed to limit exposure and manage horse movement. However, the possibility remains that a single flare-up could force further cancellations, including the main NFR event.
The NFR Team Remains Committed

The widespread EHV-1 outbreak has already resulted in multiple event cancellations. It has also raised serious concerns over animal health, safety protocols, and the future of key competitions. Veterinary experts emphasize that early detection, strict biosecurity, and continuous monitoring are critical.
Horse owners are being urged to quarantine exposed animals. Experts also advise them to check their health consistently and avoid unnecessary travel for their stock. For now, the organizers of the NFR say they remain committed to staging the show. However, final decisions may depend on the evolving health situation.
With other events already cancelled and strict regulations in place, the fate of the NFR hangs in the balance. Rodeo fans may have to wait a little longer to know if the Las Vegas spectacle can go on.
