Nicolas Cage, 57, revealed that he and girlfriend Riko Shibata, 26, tied the knot in a “very small and intimate wedding” last month at the Wynn on the Las Vegas Strip.
“It’s true, and we are very happy,” the actor said in a statement to PEOPLE.
The couple, who met over a year ago in Shiga, Japan, held the ceremony on Feb. 16, “to honor the birthday of the groom’s late father,” according to a representative from Cage.
Cage, who lives in Las Vegas, proposed to Shibata last August during a FaceTime call. Shibata was in Japan when he popped the question. Cage sent the engagement ring via FedEx.
For the nuptials, Shibata wore a handmade Japanese bridal kimono, and the “Leaving Las Vegas” star wore a tuxedo by Tom Ford. The bride walked down the aisle to her favorite song, “Winter Song” by Kiroro.
During the ceremony, the couple exchanged traditional Catholic and Shinto vows in front of a backdrop of lavish greenery and fairy lights. The ceremony also included poetry and haikus by Walt Whitman.
After the wedding, the newlyweds headed to a small celebration attended by Cage’s ex-wife Alice Kim, with whom he remains on good terms, and their shared son, Kal-El.
Records from the Clark County Clerk’s office show that Shibata took the actor’s last name on their marriage certificate.
The union comes less than two years after Cage’s last marriage to Erika Koike. The couple publicly split after only being married for four days, a divorce was granted two months later.
This is Cage’s fifth marriage, the actor previously wed Koike, Patricia Arquette, Lisa Marie Presley, and Alice Kim.
