The Black Keys, a two-man rock group from Akron, Ohio, was formed in 2001 and includes singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. The band name was inspired by a schizophrenic artist and friend of the group in Akron, who used the term “black keys” to describe things he disliked or people he did not trust. The Black Keys have roots in traditional blues and psychedelic rock stylings.

Brothers, the acclaimed 2010 release from The Black Keys, is nominated for a total of six Grammy awards, including Best Alternative Album, Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance, and Best Rock Instrumental. These nominations come after a monumentally successful year for the duo, whose first single, “Tighten Up,” remains #1 at Modern Rock radio after seven continuous weeks. This is the duo’s first #1 hit as well as the first in Nonesuch’s 40-plus year history. Additionally, the video for the single recently won Breakthrough Video at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The album also debuted at #3 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart and #2 on the Current Albums chart—the band’s highest chart positions to date.

Cage The Elephant is an alternative rock band from Kentucky whose single “Back Against The Wall” hit #1 on Billboard’s “Hot Alternative Songs” list in February 2010. Since then, the group has had two singles in 2010 break the top five, with “In One Ear” also reaching #1. Big Boi is an American Grammy Award-winning rapper, producer, actor, and one half of the critically and commercially acclaimed hip-hop duo OutKast.
