“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” Performers, The Tokens Take the Suncoast Showroom Stage April 24-26

Rock pioneers The Tokens, renowned for their 1961 chart-topper “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” bring their signature sound to the Suncoast Showroom April 24-26.

Four boys from Brooklyn, The Tokens blend showmanship, humor and musicianship in every performance, whether at Radio City Music Hall, Disneyland or on The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno. In a musical career shaped by such hits as “Tonight I Fell in Love,” “I Hear Trumpets Blow” and “Portrait of my Love,” The Tokens were among the first to successfully use a falsetto lead voice. That sound would later influence such groups as The Four Seasons, The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin and Rush.

Fans also love The Tokens for the numerous No. 1 recordings they produced for other groups, including “He’s So Fine” and “One Fine Day” for The Chiffons; “See You in September” and “I Got Rhythm” for The Happenings; and “Knock Three Times” for Tony Orlando and Dawn.

The Tokens’ fan base grew following their now-historic “Anthem ’98 Tour,” which began in Chicago’s Wrigley Field and was followed by 29 additional performances at major league games that summer. Inspiring baseball fans with their harmonic a cappella renditions of “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Oh Canada,” The Tokens were recognized by Guinness World Records as the first pop group to sing the national anthem in all 30 major league parks in a single season. The popular music channel VH-1 later named The Tokens “The Most Patriotic Group” and honored them on the special series Rock and Roll Record Breakers.
