Tyler Matthew Smith’s All Star Jam Band to Perform at The Freakin’ Frog June 27
Tyler Matthew Smith brings his dynamic 6 piece All Star San Francisco Jam Band to Freakin’ Music at the Freakin’ Frog Wednesday, June 27, 2012 . His music is an inspiring blend of rock, soul and world, in the vein of Van Morrison and Paul Simon.
The band will play a range of originals and covers, featuring harmonies and horn. Music begins at 9:30 pm. The show is free and open to the public.
An accomplished horn player turned troubadour, Tyler’s songwriting comes from a unique perspective, with influences ranging from Steven Stills to Stevie Wonder, Bruce Hornsby to the Boss, and Jackson Browne to the Jackson Five. Tyler has coupled an eclectic musical style with rejuvenating lyrics that can’t help but stir the soul.
Born in Nevada City, CA, Tyler grew up in a family and community that embraced the music and message of the 1960’s. Though trained in classical and jazz styles, he cut his teeth playing along to family records, learning from Bobby Keys, Chris Wood, the cast of Blood Sweat and Tears, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Later he would pick up sounds from more contemporary horn players like Leroi Moore, Jeff Coffin, and Karl Denson.
After leaving the music industry for a stint in New York City politics, and a subsequent period of personal upheaval and reflection, Tyler was moved to create his first original compositions. These compositions then led him to take up music anew and pursue it full-time.
The Tyler Matthew Smith Band is currently touring the western states. Their first LP, titled Hamdulillah, was released in October of 2011.
The band consists of Chris Kelly – Acoustic Guitar, Al Torre – Electric Guitar, Tyler Matthew Smith – Vocals/Guitar/Saxophone/flute, Matthew Swindells – Drums, Jon Kelly – keyboard and Jared May – Bass.
