Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group and Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT) have announced their 11th annual collaboration, entitled Art from Art which kicks off the second decade of their acclaimed partnership and marks the beginning of NBT’s 2018-2019 performance Season.
Held exclusively at the Mystère Theatre at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino, this year’s event will be presented over two weekends: Sunday, October 7 at 1 pm; and Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14 at 1 pm.
Known as one of the city’s most dynamic and highly regarded collaborations, A Choreographers’ Showcase has cultivated a robust local following by shining a spotlight on the diversity of artists that exists in Las Vegas through an ever-changing repertoire of original work.
Always a unique experience, this year’s performance will present audiences with a seamless show—breathing fresh perspective into this ever-popular event. This year’s choreographers hail from various performing arts and technical theater backgrounds—including dancers, acrobats, aerialists and even a stage rigger—and possess a range of choreographic experience. Tasked with identifying a work of art as their inspiration, Art from Art will encompass a dozen original creations performed by over 60 artists from both Cirque du Soleil and NBT including newcomer Blue Man Group.
With mentoring by Creative Guides Johanna Sapakie (Cirque du Soleil) and NBT Artistic Director Roy Kaiser along with assistance from Caine Keenan (Cirque du Soleil), Art from Art will include a special appearance by NBT’s Future Dance Scholars.
“Designed to highlight the inspirational sparks that are catalysts for every choreographic process, this year’s theme enables us to shine an even bigger spotlight on our artists’ talents while providing audiences with a singularly thematic performance experience,” said Johanna Sapakie. “I am thrilled to be a part of creatively guiding this year’s show as we embrace the evolution of ACS through Art from Art.”
Since 2007, ACS has ushered in the creation of over 100 original works and nurtured more than 500 artists in their quest to explore music, movement and collaboration. As part of a special school matinee, over 10,000 Clark County School children have had a front row seat into this one-of-a-kind performing arts experience which has included a variety of dance styles in addition to acrobatics, body percussion, comedy, puppetry and more.
“I am thrilled to work with this year’s choreographers and I am inspired by the immense talent between both companies,” said Roy Kaiser. “Art from Art will catapult this premiere project into a new decade while continuing to be a vehicle for the sharing of new ideas, identifying talent and supporting and celebrating locally-based choreographers.”
As a benefit for NBT, a 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts organization, all proceeds from the show will support the Company’s professional company productions at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, where it is the Resident Ballet Company; its affiliated Academy that trains over 400 students; and its Education and Outreach programs, which successfully impact more than 20,000 students a year in at-risk communities and beyond.
