Henderson Libraries Help Everyone Go Back to School
At this time of year, it’s not just the kids who are going back to school. Parents and teachers, as well as the students in their lives, often struggle to get back into the swing of things. Henderson Libraries’ six locations have several resources – many online – to help to make the transition from summer to school year easier for all.
Beginning Sept. 1, students K-12 as well as students taking introductory college classes can get help with their homework from 2-11 p.m. seven days a week through the district’s Live Homework Help program. The program is staffed by qualified professional tutors who are knowledgeable in math, science, English and social studies. Service is available in both English and Spanish.
Students can access their own approved reading lists by visiting Your School’s Book List and clicking on their school. In addition, the library’s Kidzone menu provides links to recommended books for both homework and leisure reading, as well as online databases of information for reports and other assignments. Older students can visit the Teenspot menu to find links to their school websites, the library’s Teen Volunteer Program and to many other resources for teen needs and interests.
Henderson Libraries also provides support to Henderson teachers. Teachers can alert Henderson Libraries when they have a project coming up by filling out Henderson Libraries’ assignment alert form with information about their upcoming assignments including the subject, class size, grade level and what materials may be used by the students. Librarians will scan their collections to see that they have the necessary materials to complete the assignment. If not, they may add new titles, or work with teachers individually to ensure that students will have equal access to the resources needed.
Parents, teachers and students alike can reach out to the library for help on almost any research question through the various options to Ask a Librarian. Besides visiting or calling the library during business hours, people can text the library at 66746 (use keyword askmylib) for quick answers. After hours, e-mail reference@hdpl.org and look for a response the next business day.
Established in 1943 as a single library in Downtown Henderson, Henderson Libraries operates six locations throughout Henderson. Henderson Libraries cooperates with other public libraries in Southern Nevada, the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Clark County School District and all other libraries around the state to provide quality service for Nevada’s residents.
