New Hip Hop Festival Headed To Vegas

Vegas has seen just about every major recording artist – and every possible casino game – multiple times over the course of the years, and improving on the current phenomenal options for entertainment seems impossible. Even the most cynical residents might want to make an exception for this latest announcement though – especially those who enjoy their music with a hip hop flavor.

Entertainment has evolved a lot over the course of the past twenty or thirty years, and Vegas has grown and changed with it. Go back a few decades, and the strip was full of rock and roll bands and cabaret acts, while gamblers gathered around smoky tables in the casinos and bars. Now, tastes in both music and gambling have changed. As revealed by Rolling Stone, the three-day event coming to Vegas this November will go by the name ‘Day N Vegas.’ There’s no spelling error in the name – that’s how it’s presented on the posters and the promotional materials. The event is going to be held at the Las Vegas Festival grounds, and almost every major name you can think of is going to be there. J.Cole, Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar will be the names headlining each night, but there’s plenty of heavyweight talent playing a supporting role. If the event is a success – which based on the lineup, it should be – organizers Goldenvoice hope to turn it into an annual event.
The three headliners are backed by a cast of all the great and good in the hip hop world, including Tyler The Creator, 21 Savage, Miguel, Brockhampton, Ab Soul, Flatbush Zombies and many more. Tickets will be on sale as of June 28th, ranging from $299 for a ticket covering all three days to $899 for a full VIP experience including lots of extra perks, such as guaranteed close-up access to the main stage, and extra performances on a second stage that general admissions entrants won’t be able to access.
Although the festival is brand news, anyone considering going can be reassured that the organizers are an experienced team who know what they’re doing. Goldenvoice is also responsible for the world famous Coachella festival, which has become a global gathering of music, fashion and culture, and is routinely one of the entertainment high points of the year. Beyonce’s 2018 Coachella set is already considered to be iconic, and so Kendrick Lemar and company will be hoping to catch the zeitgeist in a similar way this November.
Sweet To Be Scott
The confirmation of his headline slot at the inaugural festival caps off a fine few days for Travis Scott, who celebrated winning the ‘Best Collaboration’ award at the 2019 BET Awards ceremony on June 23rd for his track ‘Sicko Mode,’ which featured Drake. He was also nominated in three other categories on the night, and was unlucky to miss out on adding to his single victory. He’s had a quiet year in terms of new music generally, but did contribute a track to the ‘Game of Thrones’ concept album ‘For The Throne’ which was released in April this year as the poorly-received final season of the show aired.
Although there’s been nothing new musically from Kendrick Lamar for some time, there have been subtle signs that he may have a new album to promote by the time the festival comes to town. Lamar’s last release was the critically acclaimed ‘Damn’ in 2017, and rumors online of a new album appearing in either late 2018 or early 2019 proved to be unfounded. He denied specifically working on a new album during an interview with NME in December 2018, but did confess that his newest project was ‘something long form.’ He’s more recently removed his profile picture and cover images from all of his social media profiles, and ceased tweeting since April 2018. Fans remember that he did something similar just before releasing ‘Damn’ in 2017, so the expectation that he’s about to announce his newest project is now rife.
- Cole is already overdue to release his next record, having already given away the title ‘The Fall Off’ as long ago as April 2018. The release was anticipated towards the end of that year, but has been delayed and then delayed some more. He has however been releasing singles, with two released this month. As he’d previously stated that he intended to hold off on touring until the album was finished, it would make sense that he also will have a new set of songs to promote at the event.
Given that at least one – and possibly all three – of the headline acts will have new music to share with the world at the event, there’s plenty of reason to get excited if you’re a fan of hip hop music, and no reason not to go if you’re in town and you have the budget. As tickets are expected to sell fast, the best advice is to secure your purchase as quickly as possible in order to avoid disappointment. This promises to be a festival Vegas doesn’t forget for a long time.
