Three Nevada nonprofit organizations have partnered with a host of community donors to assemble and deliver 10,000 kits to CCSD students who attend high-poverty schools throughout Southern Nevada.
The initiative, called Direct Care to Kids, is a partnership of The Public Education Foundation, Spread the Word Nevada and Communities In Schools of Nevada. Its goal is to help meet basic immediate needs relative to personal hygiene and prevent students from falling further behind academically by providing books and educational materials to allow them the opportunity to continue learning from home during the COVID-19 pandemic while schools are closed.
Recipients include students who are considered most at-risk and case managed by Communities In Schools of Nevada (CIS) site coordinators at Title I schools throughout Southern Nevada. Many of these students are among CCSD’s most vulnerable and often lack access to at-home technology and WiFi, limiting their opportunity for distance learning.
Assembled by volunteers, the Direct to Care to Kids kits are being delivered via AT&T in-home technicians to individual homes/apartments with community drop-offs also planned at Siegel Suites.
The kits include:
- Personal hygiene items donated by Sands Cares
- School supplies and Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM) workbooks for various ages donated by The Public Education Foundation
- Books for readers at all levels donated by Spread the Word Nevada
- Bags donated by Cox Communications and Siegel Suites
