Las Vegas Locos Make an Even Six Defensive and Six Offensive Selections In UFL 2010 Draft

The Las Vegas Locos of the United Football League, today announced its selections in the 2010 UFL Draft.

Head Coach, Jim Fassel said, “We felt really good about today’s draft picks. The board fell the way we wanted and we chose the players we planned on selecting. All these players have what we are looking for – great character, strong work ethic, and are hungry to play football.”

With final picks in the first two rounds, the reigning UFL champion Las Vegas Locos made two defensive selections: Linebacker, Dominic Payne from Western State and Cornerback, Michael Ray Garvin from Florida State.

“We thought Dominic was a tremendous athlete who will give us a lot of versatility,” said Locos head coach Jim Fassel. “Michael Ray was the fastest guy I have ever seen run a 40. He is lightning fast and quick and he has a great attitude. He went to same high school as my son Mike and was a teammate of one of our linebackers, Brian Toal, so we had him in for a workout. At one time he was the leading kickoff returner in NCAA.

“Overall from the draft, we thought we needed a guy here and there to round out the team. We weren’t depleted and we did a lot of research and most every one of the player we picked we had worked out. It is down to the character of a player and his attitude. We need a mix of pros with leadership qualities and young developing players.”

Payne joined the Bloomington Extreme of the UIF after attending Western State College of Colorado. He went on to play with the Rough Riders where he earned Defensive Player of the Week in the UIF for his 9 1/2 tackles (7 solo, 5 assisted), 4 1/2 sacks, and interception for a 5 yard return.

Garvin was a standout wide receiver at Florida State from the moment he arrived. He appeared in Seminole games all four years, recording 112 tackles in his time there. He also returned kicks for the Seminoles, and in his senior season became the only player in school history to average 30 yards or more per return. He was signed as a free agent by the Arizona Cardinals where he converted to wide receiver after the 2009 NFL Draft.
