The NBA Las Vegas and Seattle expansion process advanced after team owners voted to allow the league office to begin evaluating potential ownership groups and market conditions. According to ESPN, the vote does not guarantee new teams but authorizes the league to explore bids in both cities.

Commissioner Adam Silver has previously stated that expansion requires careful study. However, the latest vote signals a formal movement toward accepting applications and reviewing proposals from prospective ownership groups. Silver described both cities as unique markets in terms of their history and connections to NBA Basketball.

“I look forward to continuing conversations with Commissioner Silver and league officials to ensure this expansion delivers lasting benefits for the state of Nevada,” Nevada’s Governor Joe Lombardo said in a statement.

Las Vegas has emerged as a major professional sports market over the past decade. The city is already home to the Vegas Golden Knights of the NHL and the Las Vegas Raiders of the NFL. Meanwhile, Seattle previously housed the Seattle SuperSonics, which relocated in 2008.

ESPN’s Shams Charania further revealed that a bidding process to this effect is expected to generate offers in the $7-10 billion range for each team. League officials have not announced a timeline for final decisions. However, multiple outlets reported that ownership groups in both markets are expected to submit formal bids in the coming months.

Why Las Vegas and Seattle Are Leading Expansion Candidates

Las Vegas hosts NBA events regularly, including Summer League games. The city’s existing venues and tourism base strengthen its position as a candidate. Seattle, meanwhile, opened Climate Pledge Arena in 2021, which serves as home to the Seattle Kraken and is equipped for NBA competition.

According to coverage from the Associated Press, league officials have acknowledged strong fan interest in both markets. Seattle has long pursued the return of an NBA franchise, while Las Vegas has positioned itself as an expanding sports hub.

Expansion would require approval from three-fourths of the Board of Governors. In addition, new ownership groups would be expected to pay a significant expansion fee, which would be distributed among existing teams.

The NBA Las Vegas and Seattle expansion vote authorizes the league to begin a structured evaluation process. According to ESPN, the next phase includes reviewing ownership applications, assessing arena readiness, and studying media market projections.

Commissioner Silver emphasized in prior statements that expansion decisions involve competitive balance considerations. The league must also determine how new franchises would impact scheduling, conferences, and revenue sharing.

If approved, the addition of two teams would likely require realignment between the Eastern and Western Conferences. Seattle would almost certainly return to the Western Conference. Las Vegas would also compete in the West under the current structure.
