According to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, nearly 158,000 Californians have moved to Nevada since 2020. Former California residents make up 43% of all new residents of Nevada in the last four years, the Las Vegas-Review Journal points out.

The Nevada DMV received its data based on driver’s license surrender statistics. According to them, the biggest year for California-to-Nevada migration was 2021, when 47,376 relocated to the Silver State. In second place was 2022, with 42,569 Californians moving to Nevada.

The total number of new residents who have moved to Nevada was 369,878 between 2020 and 2023, with about 211,893 coming from states besides California.

As far as why people who relocate, the main reasons were cheaper housing costs and rent, as well as lower tax rates statewide. Southern Nevada and Las Vegas are also close to California, likely making the transition easier compared to a cross-country move.

Additionally, Nevada is quickly becoming a top spot for hot job growth since the pandemic — and it reflects in trends like Vegas going green with sustainable health jobs.
