A Kansas couple traveled to Las Vegas to get married at the Little White Chapel. However, their wedding trip became a canon event when the bride went into labor more than a month early during a walk along Fremont Street.
Baby Arrives Early Ahead of Couple’s Las Vegas Wedding
Kelsey and Dakota Ross arrived in Las Vegas on Aug. 12 with plans to marry on Aug. 15. The couple had scheduled their ceremony at the Little White Chapel, one of the city’s best-known wedding venues. However, those plans changed on the night before their wedding.
While sightseeing on Fremont Street, Kelsey began experiencing cramps and soon realized her water had broken. She went into labor more than a month before her Sept. 23 due date, according to local reports.
The couple rushed toward the entrance of Fremont Street to seek help. According to Dakota, they encountered an off-duty OB-GYN inside a nearby White Castle while waiting for an ambulance.
“It was like everything was planned, even though it wasn’t planned,” Dakota told KLAS. Kelsey was then transported to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where she delivered a baby girl via C-section at 3:12 a.m. local time.
The couple named their daughter Kelbey Willow Sapphire Ross. Her arrival transformed the Rosses’ Las Vegas trip into an unexpected combination of childbirth and a wedding celebration.
From a Las Vegas Wedding Chapel to a Hospital Ceremony
Although the couple could no longer hold their planned ceremony at the Little White Chapel, Kelsey and Dakota decided to move forward with their wedding. Just 12 hours after welcoming their daughter, the pair exchanged vows at the hospital.
Kelsey wore a white dress for the ceremony, while Dakota dressed in a dark suit. Their newborn daughter was also included in the celebration, serving as the couple’s flower girl.
Dr. Francis Banfro, the medical director of the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, officiated the ceremony. NICU nurses and other hospital staff members gathered to witness the wedding. The hospital also transformed the room for the occasion. Balloons, flowers, and a cake helped create a wedding setting inside the medical facility.
“Our baby couldn’t have chosen a better day to be born,” Kelsey told KSNV. She noted that the date also marked her mother’s birthday and her wedding day. Dakota praised the hospital staff for helping the couple celebrate after the sudden change in plans.
The family’s experience drew attention because the events unfolded within hours of one another. A planned destination wedding became a hospital ceremony after the couple welcomed their first child during their Las Vegas visit.
An Unexpected Las Vegas Trip for the Ross Family
The Rosses had traveled from Kansas expecting to return home as newlyweds. Instead, they left Las Vegas with a new addition to their family. Their daughter arrived significantly earlier than expected, changing the final days of their trip. However, the couple proceeded with their marriage ceremony once Kelsey was able to do so.
The events also brought together several people who had not expected to play a role in the couple’s wedding or their daughter’s arrival. First, an off-duty OB-GYN was nearby when Kelsey went into labor on Fremont Street.
Later, medical staff at University Medical Center helped facilitate the hospital ceremony after the birth. Kelsey described the experience as a “dream come true” and referred to her newborn as a “Vegas baby.”
