Getting Cannabis in Las Vegas

Recreational marijuana is legal across Nevada, including Las Vegas, thanks to a law passed in July 2017. That means no medical marijuana card is required to access cannabis or buy marijuana products at dispensaries around Sin City.

Unless you want to spend some time in Las Vegas detention center for violating some of Nevada drug laws, you should know the laws and understand how Nevada state marijuana laws will impact your stay in Las Vegas.

If you’re new to marijuana or if it’s been a long time since you’ve consumed, take only a small amount, and start slow. If you’re not sure which product you want to try, talk to a medical professional. Be especially careful with edibles, which can be potent.

Where to Enjoy Marijuana in Las Vegas

While many people enjoy marijuana on the strip in Las Vegas, you and everyone visiting Las Vegas are technically not allowed to smoke or consume Mary Jane in public.  Nor can you light up in your Lyft, taxi, or Uber. Most hotels prohibit smoking and charge as much as $2,000 in cleaning fees, and getting caught lighting up on the strip could lead to a $600 fine. Airbnb “420 friendly” style accommodations are popular choices for people looking for pot-friendly lodging.

Prior to the start of lounges very recently, consumption of cannabis was only allowed in private homes. For this reason, other discrete forms of consumption other than smoking are extremely popular. Think vape pens, disposable cartridges, edibles, etc.

The Grove is the closest dispensary to McCarran International Airport, if you are flying into LAS. There are many dispensaries available throughout Las Vegas. Before you go, check with the dispensary you will be going to regarding what kind of payment they accept, as many only accept cash.

Cannabis tourism is also a growing business, allowing you to discover the best pot strains and marijuana product available on the Las Vegas Strip. Some attractions offer “Brew and Buds” tours, and behind the scenes exposure to companies and their activities pertaining to marijuana. These tours are very educational, allowing students to observe grow operations, dispensary visits and more.  The first pot consumption Lounge, NuWu Cannabis Marketplace opened in Nevada in October 2019 and offers a tasting room complete with pre-rolls, bowls, pipes a marijuana-infused beer.

What You Need to Buy Marijuana in Nevada

To purchase cannabis for recreational purposes in Las Vegas, you must be 21 years old with a valid government-issued ID, driver’s license or passport (or 18 years old with a medical marijuana card.  It must be current and valid (not expired) and scannable.  A medical marijuana card is not necessary, but will allow you to buy stronger product, and avoid retail excise tax (about 10% of the purchase price).

Without a medical marijuana card, you can buy up to an ounce of marijuana, or up to 1/8th of an ounce of concentrates (shatter, crumble, wax, oils, etc,). If you are a medical patient, you can buy up to 2.5 ounces within a 14-day period. Recreational purchases are not tracked, so in theory you could be an ounce at one dispensary, go to another dispensary across the street and buy another ounce, and so on.

Staying Safe

When it comes to operating a vehicle, marijuana is treated similarly to alcohol. Don’t consume marijuana and drive, and stay safe while you are consuming marijuana. High driving is considered a DUI in all states, including Nevada. An open cannabis container is treated the same as an open alcohol container.

Conclusion

In Las Vegas, you have plenty of options to purchase pot from legal dispensaries. As long as you purchase put legally and enjoy it safely, and do not sell to anyone (including friends and acquaintances) you will have no issues.
