was in Las Vegas Friday night to perform at a private event when he decided to venture to Wynn Las Vegas to visit with Mizumi Chef Devin Hashimoto, who he had created a friendship with following their meeting during a photo shoot for his 2012 residency at XS (Photo credit: Danny Mahoney/XS Nightclub)

After catching up, he then left to meet up with XS Managing Partner Jesse Waits for dinner where the two began to reminisce on his performances at the award-winning club. The electronic music phenomenon teased that Waits should book him to play that night, and when Waits said he couldn’t pay him, deadmau5 said he’d do it for free. The pair walked into the nightclub around 11 p.m. and took the stage at 11:30 p.m.

The entire club went dark and the dance floor came to a quiet stir as the attendees looked around to figure out what was happening. Headliner Wolfgang Gartner was not expected on until 1 a.m., but as deadmau5’s track “Strobe” started to play, the crowd began to pick up momentum. At the track’s first drop, the giant LED screen behind the stage flashed graphics of the artist’s iconic mouse headpiece, lasers went off, confetti fell from the sky and lights flashed revealing who was at the helm of the booth.

Missing his notorious headpiece, the star was a good sport and threw on a pair of glow in the dark mouse ears halfway through his performance. When Gartner showed up just before 1 a.m., he was surprised as anyone to see deadmau5 had subbed in as his opener.

The crowd was in for a treat with the surprise two hour set, as social media buzzed that the “Mau5” had returned home to XS.
