Jay, Merrill and Wayne – The Osmonds at Suncoast Showroom Mar. 27-29
The Osmond Brothers have been performing in front of worldwide audiences for 50 years. They are one of the most well-known entertainment families in the world and they continue to thrill millions of people with their brand of entertainment.
During the 60’s era of career growth and development, the Osmonds not only grew up, they grew in scope. They mastered 28 musical instruments, perfected their dance, and learned to handle an audience like pros. By 1970, the Osmonds were perfect candidates for the teenage recording market.
In 1971, combined sales from the Osmond Brothers’ and Donny’s releases garnished nine gold records – a total that exceeds the Beatles’ and Elvis’ highest single year collection of gold discs. Since embarking on their prestigious recording career, the Osmonds have sold over 77 million records and have accrued 47 platinum and gold records.
In 1973, a new type of hysteria erupted when the Osmonds toured the U.K. and it soon became known as Osmondmania. Their concerts broke sound barriers as fans rushed the stage to get closer to their favorite Osmond. The Osmond Brothers were voted Best Musical Variety Act of 1974 in Las Vegas, and in 1975 the Osmonds won the People’s Choice Award as America’s Favorite Musical Group.
In 1982, The Osmonds decided to change their musical direction and started singing country music. Their transition from pop to country music proved to be very successful. Billboard Magazine honored them with the 1982 Breakthrough Award and also acknowledged them as the #1 New Singles Group of the Year. The Country Music Association recognized them with a nomination for Best New Group of the Year as well.
Jay Osmond, the youngest of the original Osmond Brothers group, went from the little guy who would stop his performance to pick up coins the crowd threw to a polished and multi-talented performer with the drive and tenacity that has kept the Osmonds a “household” name for fifty years. Jay was about 8 years old when he learned to play the drums. During the ’70s, he was voted one of the top drummers in the country.
Merrill Osmond as lead singer is now an established solo artist. Merrill has toured the world and it’s his incredible voice as the lead you hear on hits such as One Bad Apple, Crazy Horses, Yo-Yo, Down by the Lazy River, and Love Me for a Reason. Merrill has received two People’s Choice Awards, four #1 Billboard hits and two Grammy Award nominations.
Wayne Osmond is the second oldest to the original performing Osmond Brothers. Wayne highlights the brother’s sound with his rich deep voice, often featured as lead on songs such as You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ by the Righteous Brothers, or gospel numbers such as Swing Low Sweet Chariot.
