La Dolce Vita – The Venetian Resort Celebrates 20th Year in Las Vegas
The Venetian Resort Las Vegas will celebrate its 20th anniversary on May 3. To kick off the celebration, the resort will honor the more than 650 “Founders,” or current team members who have been employed at the resort since it opened in 1999.
Activities will include:
- Individual pictures of the Founders will be featured on exterior marquees at The Venetian, paying tribute to their 20-year service with the company.
- A photo of the group will be taken in the Waterfall Atrium in front of the LOVE installation.
- A special gala event, called the “Founders Ball,” will be held in their honor, later this summer.
In addition:
- All guests who ride The Venetian Gondola attraction, both indoor and outdoor, will receive a special namesake Venetian Rose as they step aboard on May 3. This custom variety of rose, with warm coco peach undertones and champagne hues, was specially bred to honor the Las Vegas resort, and was introduced to the floral community in 2015.
- Team members will surprise and delight guests at check-in on May 3 with special treats to commemorate the occasion.
The Venetian has chosen its 20th anniversary to kick off a “Year of Celebrations,” an opportunity for guests to choose an occasion to celebrate at the resort – from intimate weekends to large-scale surprises. The resort’s unique Celebrations Team provides complimentary planning and itinerary assistance for small groups that have chosen The Venetian for their celebration – anything from a milestone birthday or anniversary, to an over-the-top bachelorette party.

- The Venetian Resort opened its doors for the first time on May 3, 1999. The resort was a resounding success, even fueling “the overall renaissance of Las Vegas itself,” according to Fortune magazine. For the past 20 years, The Venetian has continued to change the landscape of Las Vegas with its focus on the meetings and convention market, and its innovative integrated resort experience.
- The Venetian Resort is a marvel of modern construction. The foundation of The Venetian required the largest continuous concrete pour in U.S. history, using the contents of 125 cement trucks over a 30-hour period. This 68,000-square-foot slab supported the first phase of The Venetian. The Palazzo tower displaced the Pentagon as the largest building in terms of floor space in the United States, at 19 million square feet.
- When The Venetian opened in 1999, it was the largest hotel in Las Vegas with 3,036 suites. When The Palazzo tower opened in 2007, it became the largest hotel in the world, with 7,092 suites. Even today, The Venetian is the largest resort of its kind in the world.
- The Venetian is the only hotel on the Las Vegas Strip to exclusively offer suites. The resort can also lay claim to the largest suites in Las Vegas. At 650 square feet, the most intimate suites are about the size of some big-city apartments. The largest suite in the resort measures a mind-blowing 10,000 square feet.
- Upon opening, The Venetian’s standard suites were given an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for “Largest Standard Hotel Room in the World.”
- The resort’s Italian theme was said to be inspired by a romantic honeymoon visit to the City of Canals by founder Sheldon G. Adelson (Las Vegas Sands Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer) and his wife Dr. Miriam Adelson. Word is Dr. Adelson first shared the idea of bringing the magic of Venice to Vegas.
- Legendary Italian actress Sophia Loren was a featured guest for the opening ceremony of The Venetian, launching the first gondola with a bottle of champagne accompanied by Sheldon G. Adelson. According to maritime tradition, this makes the actress the official “godmother” of The Venetian’s gondola fleet.
- About 500,000 people ride the iconic gondolas every year at The Venetian Resort. This is just one reason why The Venetian has been named one of the most Instagrammed resorts in America.
- The resort’s industry-leading ECO360 sustainability program ensures a relatively small carbon footprint. For instance, while guests sleep, the day’s trash is sorted to reclaim recyclable materials, diverting an impressive 55 percent of trash from local landfills. Upon opening, The Palazzo tower was named the largest LEED-certified building in the world. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.
