Regarded as one of the preeminent rock musicians of our time, Lenny Kravitz has transcended genre, style, race and class into a 20-year musical career, one which revels in the rich influences of ‘60s and ‘70s soul, rock and funk. Kravitz’s talents as a writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist have resonated through ten studio albums into a timeless catalog. He has won four consecutive GRAMMY Awards, setting a record for the most wins in the “Best Male Rock Vocal Performance” category. Kravitz’s appeal has also been recognized by his peers; his collaborative efforts are as varied as his own influence, having worked with Madonna, Drake, Aerosmith, Jay-Z, Mick Jagger, Miguel and Alicia Keys. His tenth studio album Strut was release in September 2014 via Roxie Records / Kobalt Label Services. The rock ‘n’ roll album hits hard rhythmically and looks back on the ‘70s metropolis of funky after-hours grooves and soulful hooks. Named one of Rolling Stone’s Top Albums of the 2014, Strut includes standout titles such as “New York City,” “I Never Want to Let You Down” and “She’s a Beast.” With more than 38 million albums sold worldwide, Kravitz’s musical success has also allowed him to fulfill his creative vision beyond the recording industry.

Flogging Molly

Flogging Molly

Flogging Molly at Boulevard Pool
Friday, Oct. 2
9 p.m.; Doors at 8 p.m.
Tickets: $40

Founded in Los Angeles in 1997, Flogging Molly has always defied categorization. The infectious originality of their songs is a badge of honor and key to the band’s creativity and urgency. Flogging Molly infuses punk rock with Celtic instruments—violin, mandolin and the accordion—and merges blues progressions with grinding guitars and traditional Irish music, the music of King’s youth. Former Fastway acoustic guitarist/frontman and Dublin native Dave King formed the band with fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordion player (and former pro skateboarder) Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt and mandolinist Bob Schmidt. Theirs is music of exile and rebellion, of struggle and history and protest. It’s music of a country torn down the middle, a deeply beautiful and wounded country that knows no quit, and Flogging Molly pays homage to that resolve in every note. In 2011, the band released its fifth album Speed of Darkness, which also debuted Flogging Molly’s own record label Borstal Beat. The album, like Flogging Molly itself, is a testament to youth and resilience, to growing old and the wisdom of scars, and yet for all of the record’s darkness and the speed with which it descends, the ultimate theme is one of light.
