New Competitors Announced for Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Championship Nov. 7
A group of amateur and top-ranked Major League Eaters will face off at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino for the second annual Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Championship. The 10-minute Major League Eating-sanctioned contest will take place at 12 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. The winner will be distinguished as the Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating Champion and take home the grand prize of $1,500 cash and a monogram “M” necklace courtesy of Steve Martorano. Second, third and fourth place will take home $750, $500 and $250, respectively.
The event will be headlined by Joey Chestnut, the No. 1-ranked eater in the world and defending Martorano’s Masters Meatball Eating champion. Earlier this year, Chestnut won his fourth consecutive July 4th Hot Dog Eating Championship in addition to racking up world titles in burritos (47 in 10 minutes), bratwursts (42 in 10 minutes) and pizza (41 slices in 10 minutes). Chestnut will look to top the 50 Martorano’s meatballs he ate in 2009 when he steps to the plate on Nov. 7.
Looking to upset Chestnut will be a host of competitors including Seattle’s Erik “The Red” Denmark, a salmon-eating specialist who is ranked No. 7 in the world. However, Chestnut’s stiffest competition may come from Major League Eating legend and Henderson resident Rich “The Locust” LeFevre, who will be coming out of retirement in an attempt to capture the Martorano’s Masters title. LeFevre is a veteran in the sport with world records in such disciplines as Spam, chili and huevos rancheros. Additional Las Vegas residents competing include “The Optic” Ron Koch and “El Toro” Jimenez. Denver’s Bryan Beard, dubbed “Big Sexy” by his loyal fan base across the country, will also fly into compete for the title. The lone woman at the table will be “The Lovely” Juliet Lee, a 105-pound Maryland salon owner and mother of two. Lee, the No. 10-ranked eater in the world, is returning to Las Vegas for the first time since setting the record for cranberry sauce in 2007 (13-pounds in 8 minutes).
