Vegas Lawyer Rick Lax FOOLS Penn & Teller on CW’s “Fool Us”

Vegas Lawyer FOOLS Penn & Teller
He’s 33, but he hasn’t performed magic before a paying audience since he was 17. But last night, Lawyer-turned-magician Rick Lax went on CW’s summer ratings hit, Fool Us, and FOOLED Penn & Teller. He was the only ‘Fooler’ of the whole episode (Pictured: Teller, Rick Lax and Penn Jillette – Photo credit: Jacob Kepler/The CW — © 2015 The CW Network, LLC)

“I chose this trick because it’s the most deceptive trick I’ve created,” explained Rick. “And the goal is to fool Penn & Teller, so I wanted to bring my A Game. After that, the issue became making the trick entertaining–that was the second big challenge. And my friend–Greg, I think–suggested doing a poem as I sorted through the cards. And I remembered that Penn loves Casey at the Bat, so I took a gamble that he would name that poem, and when he did, I jumped on it.”

Rick's trick involved memorizing the order of a shuffled deck, selecting a portion of the deck, cutting the into stacks of size chosen by Penn & Teller and then separating the stack into black and red piles without looking at the faces of the cards.

Here’s the amazing thing: Back in 2008, Lax wrote a book about law school—a book that Penn gave this blurb to: “I’m really glad he’s getting the law degree so he has a job other than magic—we don’t need this kind of competition.” And last night this blurb-turned-prophecy came true.

“Boy oh boy, that was a good routine,” Penn said.

And here are some fun facts about Rick’s routine:

  • Rick performed an original magic trick called Binary Code, which is sold at Penguin Magic, the biggest magic shop in the world.
  • Rick’s act secretly paid homage to an old Penn & Teller routine in which Teller would escape from a straightjacket while Penn recited the poem “Casey at the Bat.”
