Floyd “Money” Mayweather will defend his WBC welterweight title on May 3 against WBA titleholder Marcos “El Chino” Maidana at the MGM Grand Garden Arena bout live on SHOWTIME PPV.

Mayweather (45-0, 26 KO) last fought on September 14 of last year, routing Canelo Alvarez in the biggest fight of the year, and the biggest money fight in boxing history. He also defeated Robert Guerrero in May 2013.

Maidana (35-3, 31 KO) fought his way into this spot by upsetting unbeaten Adrien Broner on December 14. Previously, the May fight was thought to be Amir Khan’s almost by default, as Golden Boy didn’t appear to have any other suitors at 147 or 154 pounds. But with Maidana beating Broner, an alternative was created to the Mayweather-Khan bout, which had received a lukewarm response at best. He became the second boxer, after Martinez to be awarded with the “Marca Pais” or “Argentine Trademark.” Argentine Ministry of Tourism gave him this honor as a way of expressing the pride and support that the Argentine nation has for those individuals.

This isn’t the first time Mayweather has faced an Argentine fighter during his storied career, defeating Gustavo Cuello in 1998, Carlos Rios in 1999 and Baldomir in 2006, all three by unanimous decision. The question now is whether Maidana is the person who will end this trend.

Included in the evening boxing lineup are: Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana, 12 rounds, WBC/WBA welterweight unification; Luis Collazo vs. Amir Khan, 12 rounds, welterweights; Adrien Broner vs. Carlos Molina, 10 rounds, junior welterweights; J’Leon Love vs. Marco Antonio Periban, 10 rounds, super middleweights; Anthony Ogogo vs. TBA, 8 rounds, middleweights; Andrew Tabiti vs. John Shipman, 6 rounds, cruiserweights; Ronald Gavril vs. Tyrell Hendrix, 8 rounds, super middleweights; Ashley Theophane vs. Angino Perez, 8 rounds, welterweights; Lanell Bellows vs. Thomas Gifford, 6 rounds, super middleweights; Ladarius Miller vs. Richard Colas, 4 rounds, welterweights.
