13th Annual Walk with the Heart of a Child Returns to Fashion Show Mall on February 27
Each year, more than 40,000 children in the United States are born with a congenital heart defect and these defects are the leading cause of illness and death in the first year of life. Aiming to raise both awareness and much need funding to fight what can be a deadly pediatric disease, Children’s Heart Foundation invites all Las Vegans to participate in the 13th Annual Walk with the Heart of a Child on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016.
This annual fun walk through Fashion Show (3200 S. Las Vegas Blvd. Las Vegas) allows participants to walk in celebration or in remembrance of the young lives affected by congenital heart defects throughout the Las Vegas community.
The morning of fun and awareness kicks off at 7 a.m. with registration, entertainment, raffles and the popular Kids Zone, with the walk beginning at 8 a.m. Fees are $25 for adults and $15 for virtual walkers (those who cannot attend the event or physically participate), active-duty military, students and seniors.
Education is an important part of the mission of Children’s Heart Foundation as they work to make a difference in the lives of children with heart conditions. Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) are the No. 1 birth defect in the United States and the leading cause of infant death. One of every 100 babies is born with CHD. Fifty years ago, many of these babies could not survive. Today, people with congenital heart disease are living long, healthy lives due to medical and surgical advances and expert care – but there is still much more to be done. It is the hope this annual event continues to improve the level of care provided to those impacted by CHD.
Founded in 2001, the Children’s Heart Foundation is committed to making a difference in the lives of children with heart conditions through empowering families through emotional, educational and financial support leading to a higher quality of life. Children’s Heart Foundation has for main goals: to lend support to families as they deal with the emotional and financial toll exacted by a child’s heart condition, to provide a medically-supervised camp experience for children with heart conditions, to educate healthcare professionals and the general public on pediatric cardiology issues; and to support research in the area of pediatric cardiology.
