More than 200 volunteers from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Palabra Viva, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Las Vegas community will join forces on Tuesday, March 24, to give area kids the childhood they deserve by building a new playground at Palabra Viva

The design is based on children’s drawings created at a special design event in December.

A playground is more than a playground. It’s a brain-expander, friend-maker, and muscle-builder. Play is central to a child’s ability to grow into a productive adult. It can transform children from sedentary, bored and solitary to physically, mentally and socially active. KaBOOM! works to bring balanced and active play into the daily lives of all children, particularly those growing up in poverty in America. We do this by creating great places to play, inspiring communities to promote and support play and driving the national discussion about the importance of play in fostering healthy and productive lives (#playmatters).

Palabra Viva church operates a weekly food pantry servicing some of the hardest hit within their community, and young children often wait in line with their families for 2-3 hours at a time. This playground would give children something to do while waiting with their families. And, with an onsite playground, the church would be able to apply for a child care license and continue to give back to their community by offering low-cost child care services.

Each year, more than 200,000 children in the United States sustain a playground injury requiring medical attention. Orthopaedic surgeons treat bone and joint injuries, know first-hand the impact of playground-related accidents, and are committed to their prevention. The Academy is dedicated to creating Safe and Accessible Playgrounds where children—with and without disabilities—can play together safely. This playground will provide children opportunities to play, improve balance, flexibility and strength, and build strong bones for life (#WhyIBuild).

This will be the 16th playground built by AAOS in partnership with KaBOOM!—the second in the Las Vegas area—since 2000. AAOS supports KaBOOM! in promoting and protecting a child’s right to active play at home, at school and in the community.
