Brookman Elementary School Guinness World Records Attempt: 20,000+ Glow Sticks Measuring 3.92 Miles Illuminate School

The glow sticks represented each book the students read and were tested on, with an 80 percent comprehension or better from September 2015 to January 2016.

The final number of books read was 21,178.  The number of glow sticks recorded by the witnesses for Guinness Book World Records, 20,703, and the line measured 3.92 miles–pending final approval. The current world record holder is a Primary school in Australia with 9,800 glow sticks.

Comedy Magician Adam London co-hosted the Guinness World Records attempt with Alana London (Pronounced: Uh-LAY-Nuh), his wife and fourth-grade teacher at Brookman Elementary School. Adam London who performs his all-age friendly, comedy magic show at the D Las Vegas, partnered with Alana London, to sponsor the event by purchasing the glow sticks. Adam London performed for the students and their families, and the school hosted a glow themed carnival following.

“Adam had been toying around with a world record attempt of his own, and I wanted to get my students excited about reading,” Alana London said. “A light bulb went off and immediately we rallied together to get the entire school involved in breaking a record.”

“It was magic to see the smiles and hard work put forth by the students to obtain their goal,” Adam London added.

Brookman Elementary School’s “Reading Makes Us Bright” program fell within Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky’s “Read by 3” initiative, which encourages students to be able to read on grade level by third grade.
