Camp Offers Teens Summer Break

There is more to summer than mindless time spent at the pool or in front of the television, especially for teens. While other camps are designed for the younger kids, TeenTrek is geared for teens ages 13 to 15. The camp, held at Helen Meyer Community Center, 4525 New Forest Drive in southwest Las Vegas, was planned by teens for teens, ensuring a well-rounded, educational and fun summer for all. TeenTrek operates from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 8 to Aug. 21. The camp is closed on July 3 for the Fourth of July holiday. Cost for the camp is $15 per day or $60 per week.

TeenTrek encourages teens to be community-oriented through field trips to a local police station, crime scene investigation unit and radio and TV stations as well as workshops in first aid, exercise and nutrition and survival training. TeenTrek participants also will design and complete a community service project. The camp also aims for fun with additional trips to the hiking trails of Mount Charleston, indoor rock climbing and bowling along with activities such as lessons in art techniques, music and outdoor skills.

After camp, teens can enter Teen Scene, the community center’s free program offered from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday all year. In the program, teens participate in planned activities and use the amenities in the center’s Teen Room. Although teens can sign themselves in and out of Teen Scene, a participant card must be signed by a parent or guardian in order to participate.

Those interested in TeenTrek or Teen Scene can contact the Helen Meyer Community Center at 455-7723 or visit the Web site at www.accessclarkcounty.com/parks.
