CineVegas to Host Area 52 Screening Series at the Onyx

For those with a penchant for rare and hard-to-find underground, cult and midnight movies, CineVegas offers a solution with the new “Area 52” screening series at the Onyx Theatre. Beginning Sunday, February 22, and every Sunday thereafter for four weeks, the series will feature films which have previously played at CineVegas in the Festival’s popular “Area 52” section. The series will include feature-length films, as well as shorts and trailers.

Screenings will be held at 9pm every Sunday, with a reception to be held prior to each screening at 8:30pm. Tickets are $7 each and can be purchased at the Onyx Theatre, located at 953 E. Sahara Blvd., Suite 16 in Las Vegas, inside The Rack in Commercial Center. For more information, log-on to www.cinevegas.com/area52.

The series will launch on Sunday, February 22 with director Jim Finn’s INTERKOSMOS, which played at the 2006 Festival. The film chronicles the Interkosmos project, the secret pinnacle of USSR and DDR collaboration in the unforgiving vacuum of space. Prior to the film, CineVegas will feature shorts from local filmmaker Tom Barndt, whose films have played at both CineVegas and the Sundance Film Festival.

Infamous cult director Craig Baldwin’s MOCK-UP ON MU will play on Sunday, March 1. A selection from the 2008 Festival, MOCK-UP ON MU follows the intertwined lives of Jack Parson, inventor of rocket fuel; Marjorie Cameron, a new age sex leader; and L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction writer-turned-Scientology founder, as the “insansational” ‘60s feeds them with the occult, beatniks and spaceships to the moon.

Continuing the series on Sunday, March 8 is James Fotopoulos’s BACK AGAINST THE WALL, which played CineVegas in 2002. Levey, tormented by his power plays at work and at home, keeps a tense, close eye on his girlfriend June. He starts to panic as he hears stories about her work as a lingerie model from his friend Ed, a man with no neck. Soon, she is drawn to the steamroller life of Ed, who likes empty bottles and heavy guns.
