City of Henderson Homeowner's Night Provides Building Permit Answers for Do-It-Yourself Projects
While do-it-yourself projects around the house require some research, careful planning and some handyman skills, homeowners often don’t realize many projects also require a building permit. The City of Henderson Development Services Center will have extended hours on Wednesday, May 20, to answers questions and help with the permitting process.

At the event, residents can learn how to obtain a permit for work previously performed on their homes, get information on what work requires a permit and apply for permits for new work. Getting a building permit is the first step toward protecting the outcome and investment value of a construction project and guarding against a lawsuit or injury.

Building permits are very beneficial to the homeowner and the community. By working with an expert code official, homeowners benefit from their knowledge of building codes to ensure the construction project is built right, will be safe and will last.

City staff members will be present to answer questions related to building permits, neighborhood issues and zoning violations including:

  • Permit applications
  • Plan requirements
  • Permit fees
  • Water heater permits
  • Requesting inspections
  • Property maintenance

In addition, residents will also be able to take advantage of the city’s month-long amnesty program that allows homeowners to self-disclose non-permitted or non-code compliant work in their homes without experiencing any penalties for the required plan review and permit fees.

Each home is an investment. If the construction project does not comply with the codes adopted by the community, the value of the investment could be reduced. Property insurers may not cover work performed without permits and inspections. Also, selling a home that has had modifications without a permit may be difficult.
