Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health Hosts Free Balance and Memory Screenings on Oct. 4 - Screenings Are Free and Open to the Public
Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health
is offering free balance and memory screenings on Thursday, Oct. 4 from 1 – 4 p.m. These confidential screenings are courtesy of the Center’s neurorehabilitation and research teams and will assess the participants’ balance and memory.

While these screenings do not provide a specific diagnosis, they will be able to indicate if an individual should pursue further medical evaluation.

All participants will receive a copy of their assessment and information on participating in clinical trials currently enrolling at the Center. Participants will be provided with information on free classes aimed at reducing fall risk as well as resources and tools to improve their health.  Additionally, participants will learn how to sign up for “Stepping On,” a free, seven-week community-based educational workshop designed for those who have fallen or have a fear of falling while living at home. Through the course, which will be taught by the Center’s physical and occupational therapists, participants will learn about a wide range of topics including home hazards, vision, medicine and exercise to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.

Those interested must register online at keepmemoryalive.org/Screen18. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

WHY:  Falls are not a normal part of aging and most can be prevented. Participations can learn more on fall prevention methods, memory concerns and lifestyle changes — physical and mental exercise, diet, managing stress — that may help people age successfully.

  • One out of three adults aged 65 or older falls each year, but less than half tell their healthcare provider
  • Approximately 40 percent of those admitted to a nursing home have fallen within 30 days prior to admission
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in America
