Flamenco Music Adds Spice to Concerts at Winchester Theater
The World Vibration Concert Series continues with flamenco music by seasoned performer Salvadora Galan at 2 p.m. March 8 at the Winchester Cultural Center Theater, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children and seniors.
For this performance, Galan, a singer and guitarist, will perform traditional, or puro, flamenco music along with contemporary pieces. Galan’s talent was cultivated from a young age, and her unique style is reflected in her ability to not only sing flamenco but also accompany herself on guitar.
Galan was born in Olvera, a small town in Spain, and grew up in a family where flamenco was a way of life. By age 13, she won her first flamenco singing competition, and by 17, she began her professional career, traveling throughout Spain and Portugal and working with flamenco legends such as La Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera. Galan has also performed throughout Mexico and the United States with Maria Benitez, Susana de Palma and Jose Molina companies.
Galan was deemed a “gypsy volcano of pure flamenco feeling” by Jaime Castaneda Reyes of El Universal de Ciudad Juarez in Mexico. Candelora Versace, of the Santa Fe New Mexican, wrote “her mournful, ancient song reminds us that for all the fiery footwork, traditional Spanish dance is more about true passion for life and the fight with death rather than mere entertainment.”
Winchester Cultural Center has hosted musicians from all over the world through the World Vibration series over the last three years. Musicians from Brazil, Ireland, China, Thailand, Mexico and many other countries have brought their distinct rhythms to the Winchester stage. The series continues in April with Argentinean tango.
