At one point during the event a woman from the audience threw a shoe at Clinton. Clinton dodged the object and at first asked if it was a bat. Security ushered the woman out of the room and into federal custody.

“Our staff denied her access before she later rushed past security,” said Jerry Simms of the recycling institute. Simms offered “his deepest apology for that crude interruption.”

“I didn’t know that solid waste management was so controversial,” said Clinton. “Thank goodness she didn’t play softball like I did.”

The organization represents more than 1,700 companies that process, broker and industrially consume metals, paper, plastics, glass, rubber, electronics and textiles.
