Organized by the Harvey Milk Foundation, Harvey Milk Day is a day of remembrance on May 22 for the American politician and gay rights activist who was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. Tragically, while he was serving as San Francisco Supervisor, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were shot and killed by former Supervisor Dan White on Nov. 17, 1978.
