Henderson Libraries Hosts Creative Writing Contest for Teens
To encourage burgeoning young writers, the Henderson Libraries invites youth in the sixth through 12th grades to participate in the 2011 Teen Creative Writing Contest. A judge, unaffiliated with the library, will select the best work of poetry and prose in two categories: grades six through eight and grades nine through 12. Entries will be judged on creativity, clarity and quality as well as correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. There is no fee to enter, but contestants must submit their pieces by Monday, Feb. 28. Those selected will be featured in the Henderson Libraries’ literary magazine and asked to read their entries at a reception set for April.
Poetry, short stories, one-act plays or nonfiction essays or memoirs will be accepted up to 2,000 words. School reports are not suitable for judging. Each writer can submit up to three original, unpublished pieces, which must be typed in a legible 12-point font, doubled spaced and have the piece’s title included on every page. Electronic submissions should be formatted for Microsoft Word or PDF.
Participants will be notified by Thursday, March 31, if their pieces were selected for publication. Entries will be accepted at any Henderson Libraries branch or via e-mail at sbokner@hdpl.org. Entries submitted in person must include a hard disk copy of the entries labeled with the participant’s name. All participants must complete an entry form found on the Henderson Libraries’ website at http://www.mypubliclibrary.com/teenspot.
