InCorp Teams with AFAN to Send 17 Children Affected by HIV/AIDS to Summer Camp

Right now, duffle bags and foot lockers are being pulled out of storage. Shorts, T-shirts and Mad magazines are being packed. While hundreds of thousands of kids are heading off to summer camp for water sports, horseback riding and what will become lifelong friendships, many Las Vegas Valley children will be stuck at home.

For the kids affected by HIV/AIDS, the idea of going away to camp is an intangible one. But together with Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) and local business and “Best Place to Work” finalist, InCorp, 17 of these children will get to experience all camp has to offer for one week this summer.

These kids are often prevented from having the same experiences as the others. Many families can’t afford both the treatments and the cost of sending a youngster off to play with his or her bunkmates.

“When you see so many children unable to take advantage of the opportunities youth presents, it becomes our responsibility to help any way we can,” says Karolyn Knight, Director of Community and Affiliate Relations. “We can’t save the world, but we hope to make small changes where they count.”

AFAN’s Camp Courage is a cost-free summer camp program for kids ages 6 – 17 affected by the disease. This summer, camp takes place the week of July 3 at Camp Laurel in Pasadena, Calif. Both the Camp Courage Program and Camp Laurel are designed to help children overcome the isolation and depression often associated with with HIV/AIDS. These programs foster self-confidence and self-fulfillment. They let kids be kids for a while.
