Local Groups Collect School Supplies for Children in Need
Below is a partial list of campaigns throughout southern Nevada to collect and distribute school supplies to local children in need (Our thanks to David Sheenan at Clark County School District for allowing us to reprint this article)

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Nevada is partnering with News 3, Lotus Broadcasting and Sam’s Club to collect school supplies and uniforms to distribute to 44,000 students in 43 schools throughout the state, including Clark County. CIS of Nevada is the local affiliate of the nation’s leading dropout prevention program. CIS continues to seek additional partners to host “Fill the Bus” collection drives through Aug. 20. Through Aug. 28, Bank of Nevada is collecting school supplies for hundreds of local students in need. Donors can drop off new school supplies at any of the 11 Bank of Nevada branches in Southern Nevada.  The supplies will be provided to students at Sewell, McMillan and Virgin Valley Elementary Schools. The Salvation Army in Mesquite is accepting applications for the “Back to School Buddy Program.” The program provides K-12 students in need with a backpack filled with school supplies. The items will be distributed to students Aug. 20. Call (702) 345-5116 for more information.

Through Aug. 21, Crazy Pita Rotisserie & Grill is partnering with The Shade Tree Women & Children’s Shelter to collect donations of school supplies for the children living at the shelter. Area residents are asked to donate new and unused school supplies for students in grades K-12. Iems can be dropped off at Crazy Pita Rotisserie & Grill, located at The District at Green Valley Ranch. Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza and Grill locations are accepting backpacks and school supplies through Aug. 21. Donations will be delivered to Communities in Schools for distribution to local schools. Call (702) 638-9500 for details.

A Ward 4 back to school fair will be held Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Durango Hills Community Center/YMCA, located at 3521 N. Durango Drive. School supplies and backpacks will be distributed while supplies last. For more information, call (702) 229-2524.

A Ward 5 back to school fair is set for Aug. 22 from 8 a.m. to noon at Lorenzi Park, 3333 W. Washington Avenue. Children in grades K-5 can receive a backpack and school supplies. more information, call (702) 229-5443.

Families in need can sign up in person at Salvation Army Family Services at 1581 N. Main St. in Las Vegas, or may sign up their students through their CCSD school principal through the Focus School Project online.
