The Lied Clubhouse quickly transformed into a story-telling affair bursting with laughter and applause as pageant contenders read aloud to the children. By presenting books about Asian culture and tradition, contestants were able to educate the kids on their ethnicity, furthering the pageant’s purpose of creating a more culturally-aware community. From the books selected, the children particularly enjoyed “Dragon Dance,” “Mulan,” “Five Little Monkeys,” “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” “No, David!” and “The Cat in the Hat.”

“Reading at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada reminds me that our purpose extends far beyond the pageant stage,” said Miss Asian Las Vegas Owner and Founder Annie Chang. “We are role models in the community, and the best way to encourage children to read is by interacting with them in a sincere and relatable way.”

In addition to reading, contestants communicated the significance of literacy and learning. The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) established “International Literacy Day” more than 40 years ago, promoting literacy as a human right and the foundation of learning.
