Nevada Ballet Theatre Presents Swan Lake Act II and Sleeping Beauty Act III Tribute to Tchaikovsky Nov. 1-2

Nevada Ballet Theatre Presents Swan Lake Act II and Sleeping Beauty Act III Tribute to Tchaikovsky Nov. 1-2
Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT) will launch its 42nd (2013-2014) main stage performance season and its second year as Resident Ballet Company of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts with Swan Lake Act II and Sleeping Beauty Act III in A Tribute to Tchaikovsky on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, November 2 at 7:30 pm.

Tickets range from $35 – $128 (plus fees) and can be ordered by calling The Smith Center Box Office at (702) 749-2000 or by visiting www.nevadaballet.org.

NBT will pay tribute to Ballet’s legendary composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and his collaborative partnership with choreographers Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. Staged by former Prima Ballerina Cynthia Gregory, Swan Lake Act II tells the tale of “Odette,” a beautiful maiden transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer and the prince who swears his enduring love for her. NBT Company Artist Alissa Dale will dance the role of “Odette” and Steve Goforth will dance the role of “Prince Siegfried.”

“I am so happy to be staging Act II of my favorite ballet, Swan Lake, for NBT,” said Repetiteur Cynthia Gregory. With its gorgeous music, tragic romance, the magical beauty of the swans and the incredible role of “Odette,” the Swan Queen, Act II is the gem of the entire ballet; from country to country, from version to version, it has been handed down from one generation to the next with great integrity.”

Premiering in 1890, in St. Petersburg, Russia, Sleeping Beauty is the second of Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker). With choreography after Marius Petipa and staged by Ballet West Principal Ballet Mistress Pamela Robinson-Harris and Ballet West Ballet Mistress Jane Wood-Smith, Act III of this treasured classic delights with a royal wedding, while showcasing a cast of fanciful characters including Puss in Boots and the White Cat; Princess Florine and the Bluebird; and Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf. NBT Company Artist Mary LaCroix will perform the role of “Princess Aurora” accompanied by Guest Artist, New York City Ballet (NYCB) Principal Dancer, Jared Angle in the role of “Prince Florimund.”

Angle joined the famed NYCB in 1998 and was promoted to Principal dancer in 2005. He was recently seen in Las Vegas when he made his debut on the Reynolds Hall stage as part of the NYCB MOVES Tour in March 2013.

On Friday, November 1 at 11 am, over 1,500 local students will witness the magic of Sleeping Beauty Act III (Aurora’s Wedding) and gain a deeper understanding of the art form through a special question and answer period with Education & Outreach Director, Terané Comito.
