New Providence Park Grand Opening combined with Sunny 106.5 Ice Cream Sunday
Free ice cream, a new park, a petting zoo and confetti…These were just a few of the things that made the recent Sunny 106.5 Ice Cream Sunday and grand opening of Huckleberry Park in the Providence Master Planned Community a fun way to spend the day for families and friends and celebrate a new outdoor recreational option.

Festivities began in the morning with remarks from local dignitaries and the community and park master plan developer, Focus Property Group, to officially welcome the new neighborhood park – the third in Providence. The ceremony paid tribute to fallen police officer Igor Soldo, who was a Providence resident, and culminated with confetti cannons spraying the audience. Ice Cream Sunday and other activities continued until 2 p.m.

Participants were Assemblyman James Oscarson; John Ritter, CEO of Focus Property Group; and Bob Ruszczyk, Chris DeLong and Jenna Bell of the Providence Master Homeowners Association. Officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and friends and family of Soldo and fallen Officer Alyn Beck also were in attendance.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to introduce Huckleberry Park than with the fun that always has been a part of our Sunny 106.5 Ice Cream Sunday,” said Deonna Stocker, manager of the Providence Information Center. “This event complements Providence’s small town America ambiance and was a perfect way to bring our residents and the community together. And free ice cream was the cherry on top!”

Stocker added the event also provided a wonderful opportunity to honor and remember Officer Soldo. “Igor was not only a beloved member of our Providence family, but also of the valley’s law enforcement community and the entire Las Vegas Valley. We’ve dedicated a park bench in Huckleberry Park to honor him and create a lasting tribute,” she said.

The bench is being moved to the park’s full-size lighted basketball court because of Soldo’s love of the game. Other amenities in the neighborhood park include: large and small dog parks, multi-use events field, an outdoor stage area, swings, picnic areas, shade ramada, path lights along walking trails, and other space designated for future amenities.

Meadow Gold provided the event’s free ice cream. In addition to the individual frozen treats, the Providence Master Homeowners Association held ice cream-eating contests for children and adults throughout the day. Other Ice Cream Sunday activities included bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painting, entertainment by Amazing Clowns, food stands, and other booths and exhibitors.

Continuing with Providence’s vision of building a stronger community, attendees also were invited to bring new or gently used books for Spread the Word Nevada, which promotes literacy and the joy of reading. Providence’s long-standing partnership with the nonprofit organization parallels the community’s theme of celebrating Americana and the literary legacy of the country’s greatest writers. The new park’s name was inspired by the classic Mark Twain character Huckleberry Finn, and its sister Knickerbocker Park was named for Washington Irving’s “Knickerbocker Tales.”
