Project 150 to Celebrate One-Year Anniversary with Fundraiser on Nov. 28
Project 150, a local nonprofit organization serving homeless students, will mark its first anniversary with a celebration fundraiser on Nov. 28 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Dom DeMarco’s Pizzeria & Bar, at 9785 W. Charleston Blvd.
Project 150 provides help and support, including food, clothing and shelter, to homeless students. The charity was formed in December 2011, after Don Purdue, vice president of purchasing for Harmony Homes and president and trustee of Project 150, learned how widespread the homeless problem is throughout Clark County’s schools.
“It was just a few weeks before Christmas, and I met with a teacher from Rancho High School who was in tears because during the two-week Christmas break, some of her students were going to lose access to their only reliable daily meal,” Purdue said. “With the help of Harmony Homes and lots of great friends, within a few weeks we were able to provide supplies and restaurant gift cards to 17 families.”
Determined to help homeless students year-round, Purdue and Project 150 co-founder Patrick Spargur created the nonprofit. The organization is celebrating its anniversary one month early in order to begin raising extra funds and donations for the coming holiday season. In the past year, Project 150 has provided its services to nearly 1,000 homeless and displaced teens at 15 local high schools.
“When Don told me that there are more than 5,000 homeless students in the Clark County School District, I knew our company had to get involved,” said Robb Beville, president of Harmony Homes. “This community has been very good to us, and we’re proud to give back by helping students in need find support and stability.”
Purdue said in the past year, Harmony Homes provided support and funding to establish Project 150’s charitable trust. Additionally, Harmony Homes’ sales offices across the valley act as drop-off centers for donations to Project 150.
