Recognizing that the “Feast of Seven Fishes” plays a big part in the Italian-American’s December 24 festivities, Siena’s holiday menu features staple seafood with homemade pasta dishes such as the popular Baccalà (cod fish), Clams Casino (baked stuffed clams), Grilled Octopus, Scungilli Salad (sea snail), Fritto Misto (fried smelt, shrimp, calamari, and scallops in spicy marinara sauce) and Linguine Sciue Sciue (black ink linguini with mussels, clams, and scallops in Fra Diavolo sauce and topped with lobster tail). In the Italian tradition, Christmas Eve is considered a day of fasting and abstaining from meat until Christmas Day. For this reason, a grand meal with plenty of seafood is prepared on the night before Christmas.
