The Center Impacts Lives of More Than 87,000 People During Second Year in Downtown Las Vegas
Since opening The Robert L. Forbuss Building in Downtown Las Vegas just two years ago, The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (The Center) has more than doubled its impact within the Southern Nevada community (Pictured: guest speaker Megan Phelps-Roper at God Hates Nobody event)

In the two years since opening the building, The Center has experienced growth within the Las Vegas Valley across all areas of its programming. In 2014 alone, the nonprofit impacted the lives of more than 87,000 individuals. Highlights from The Center’s first two years in the building include:

  • Increased annual group meeting attendance by more than 80 percent
  • Improved participation in QVolution youth programming by more than 2,000
  • Distributed over 142,424 HIV-prevention materials, condoms and safer sex kits within the community
  • Almost doubled participation in Identi-T* transgender and gender non-conforming programs
  • Nearly tripled the number of new STD-positive identifications
  • Doubled the number of individuals tested for both HIV and STDs through the Southern Nevada Health District

To commemorate two years in the Robert L. Forbuss Building and 21 years in the community, The Center will host its second Homecoming community event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 4.

The Homecoming celebration will feature an expo showcasing The Center’s ongoing programs, peer-led groups and community organizations; children’s activities; tours of the facility; raffle prizes; a fundraising yard sale starting at 8 a.m. to benefit The Center’s ACT III senior programming; a free pancake breakfast starting at 10 a.m.; an Easter Bonnet Contest; appearances by the Easter Bunny and more. Free HIV / STD testing will also be available throughout the day. Homecoming is free and open to the public.

Located on Maryland Parkway, the 16,000-square foot Robert L. Forbuss Building is energy efficient and includes an inviting 4,000-square foot courtyard with an expansive library and cyber center, modern and comfortable furniture, delicious and affordable Bronze Café, multipurpose event hall and conference rooms, spacious drop-in center complete with a 75-inch television, pool table and computer area, and much more.

In 2015, The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (The Center) celebrates 21 years as a community-based organization supporting and promoting activities directed at furthering the well-being, positive image, and human rights of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, its allies, and low to moderate income residents in Southern Nevada.
